A few things you can do to help your system continue to work as efficiently as possible:
- regularly change your filters
- keep leaves, weeds and debris from accumulating around your outdoor unit
- have routine maintenance completed by a professional HVAC contractor
Most standard air filters should be changed every 30 days, or more frequently if you have pets, smoke or allergens in the house, all of which make filters work harder. Dirty filters will block airflow and cause your HVAC system to work harder to maintain an ideal temperature. This overburdens the unit, which could cause overheating, premature wear, and HVAC airflow problems.
Having your HVAC system inspected twice a year (ideally in the spring and fall to coincide with the cooling and heating seasons), will ensure everything is running smoothly and your house will stay warm and cool as needed.
This one depends on the design of your duct system. Most duct systems are designed to distribute a specific amount of airflow based on equipment size. As a result, with some systems, even closing off one vent can negatively affect the system performance and may cause premature system failure.
With proper installation and maintenance, an HVAC system could potentially last 15-20 years.
